The Gay Polo League has come to England for its first UK tournament – and Horse & Country was there to film the fun-filled action.

Inspire and empower

The Gay Polo League (GPL) is based in Wellington, Florida and was founded in 2006 by Chip McKenny. It now has members in 13 countries around the world and is still growing.

GPL aims to inspire and empower people who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, through the participation of polo and other equestrian-related sports.

“We represent a wide range of ages, backgrounds and skill levels – in fact, some of us had never been on a horse before joining,” explains Chip. “We actively train and compete in mainstream matches and events to test our skills, share our enthusiasm for the sport, and change perceptions about our community.”

Gruelling chukkers

GPL’s inaugural UK tournament welcomed four teams, from eight different nations, to the beautiful Zacara Polo Grounds in Berkshire.

The teams battled it out over two days, but it was Phelps Media who took the title in the final, after four gruelling chukkas, beating RSM by 5-3.

Horse & Country was there to catch all the action, and meet the incredible people behind the polo.

Polo Proud: The Gay Polo League premieres on Wednesday 26 September at 8pm. Don’t miss it.
