A yearling has been found entangled in baler twine, which had cut into her legs and chest.

Distress

Izzy was discovered by a member of the public, tied with baler twine around her neck, and clearly in distress. Too young to be tethered, she had panicked – causing the rope to wrap around her legs and chest and cut into her.

“Twineshould never be used to tether a horse,” saidWorld Horse Welfare field officer, Sarah Tucker, who attended the scene along with the RSPCA.

“Izzy’s case is a prime example of theserious consequences from inappropriate tethering, particularly when the horse is so young.

Badly damaged

The yearling’s owner was found, who agreed to sign her over, and Izzy was sent to World Horse Welfare’s Penny Farm rescue and rehoming centre for treatment.

The filly’s leg was sobadly damaged it needed to be stapled, then cleaned and bandaged every day. She was also suffering from a skin condition and lice infestation.

Perfect patient

According to centre manager Fran Williamson, her wounds are healing well.

“Izzy is making a great recovery and is behaving like a perfect patient,” she said. “We’re confident that once she has undergone rehabilitation in our centre she has areally bright future aheadand will hopefully be a fantastic candidate for our rehoming scheme.”
