Horse stuck under a trailer is rescued by fire fighters

The Avon and Somerset Fire Service Animal Rescue team were called out to rescue a young horse that was trapped beneath a trailer last month.

Having been alerted to the horse’s predicament, rescue charity HorseWorld sent vets from B&W Equine to assess the animal’s welfare and condition.

The brown mare had been confined to a pen on a wasteland area in Avonmouth, Bristol and had used the trailer for her only shelter. Living deep in muck, the trapped horse was also surrounded by litter and had evidence of previous injuries.

However, she was deemed healthy enough to be sedated for the team to safely complete the rescue.

“It was so distressing to see this poor mare exhausted and struggling. I was glad that HorseWorld stepped in to help save this horses’ life,” said one police officer.

Now known as Minty, the rescued mare is recovering at HorseWorld’s Farm in Bristol and is said to be doing well after the traumatic ordeal.

“On arrival, her demeanour was that of a horse who had emotionally shut down,” said HorseWorld’s Managing Director, Mark Owen.

“Her eyes were glazed and she would completely blank us if we spoke to her over the stable door. Her injuries were consistent with brutal training methods so it is not hard to see why, but it was utterly heart-breaking to see a horse with such broken spirit,” he added.
