Emily King has over taken William Fox-Pitt to take the lead after day one at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials (11 September).

Over the moon

This is the 18-year-old’s first three star event and she posted a dressage score of 35.4pen, riding Brookleigh – her best at any international event.

“I’m over the moon, he keeps his cool and doesn’t get too excited, I knew he could do it,” said Emily, who’s mum Mary is grooming for her. “He felt really in tune with me when we were warming up.”

Blenheim is Emily’s first competition following a nasty fall on the cross-county at the Junior European Championships at Bishop Burton (16 August).

Gee him up

“Fortunately nothing was broken and Brookleigh wasn’t injured,” said Emily. “He’s like a dog and follows me round the stable, but can be a bit too laid back and you need to gee him up a bit.”

William Fox-Pitt led the field for most of the day with his first ride 2012 Blenheim CCI3*winner Seacookie (41.8pen). The recent bronze World Games medalist then took the lead with Freddie Mac (38.0pen), which put him in first and second place.

Last to go was Emily King, who snatched the overnight lead from William at the last minute.
