Horse fatality at Burghley

A horse has been euthanised after picking up an injury on the cross-country course at Burghley (September 7).

Hit his stifle

Sara Squires’ ride Orto hit his right stifle over the Rolex Combination at fence 19. Neither horse or rider fell, but Sarah pulled up straight afterwards when Orto seemed to be lame behind.

He was taken to the Burghley veterinary hospital facilities where a detailed examination was carried out. Sadly the decision was made to euthanise Orto on welfare grounds.

Talented horse

A Burghley spokesman said: “We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Sara, the owners Mr and Mrs Budd, and all associated with Orto – such a talented horse.”
