Donkeys used in a political protest in Kenya

A herd of donkeys have been used in a political protest in Kenya, with the words ‘we are fed up’ spray-painted onto them in Swahili.

No food or water

The protest attracted a large crowd which the police reportedly struggled to control, and all 36 donkeys were impounded.

The Brooke stepped in to negotiate their release, believing the donkeys had been without food or water for hours. The donkeys were then taken to the Kenyan Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) where they were attended to by James Kithuka, a Brooke animal welfare officer.

Scorching sun

“As animal welfare advocates we needed to take them to a good place where they would be provided with clean drinking water, sufficient feed, and a clean environment to play, relax and roll,” he said.

“We needed to consider the plight of these donkeys and immediately free them from the scorching Nairobi sunlight.”

If nobody claims the donkeys after two months the KSPCA will request permission to rehome them.
