Back to Basics: Retraining of Racehorses

Season 3

Meet Lou Robson, professional ex-racehorse trainer, and Philippa Gilmore from RoR who will be walking us through the stages of retaining a racehorse.
Nicki Reynolds from Redmills examines our ex-racehorses showing the difference between newly retire racehorses and horses that have been out of racing for a period of time.
Nicki and Philippa go into detail of the do's and don'ts when it comes to feeding your ex-racehorse.
Many ex-racehorses need re-backing in order to successfully retain them. Expert, Lou Robson, gives a step by step guild on how to do the simple ground work before getting on your ex-racehorse.
Once you have successfully done your ground work, next is how to get on safely. Lou demonstrates how to retrain your ex-racehorse how to stand while getting on from a mounting block.
Once we have mounted, fitness work and hack in particular are a really good way of keeping your ex-racers brain active and teaching them to work with others.
Flat work and schooling is so important when it comes to the retaining process. That is why Lou shows us the keys areas to focus on when re-schooling our ex-racehorse.
Newly retired racehorses traditionally will not be used to poles on the ground, so teaching them how to use them is a really effective tool in their training. Lou demonstrates how to introduce and use poles in your training.
Jumping your ex-racehorse for the first time can be a challenge, but Lou breaks it down and shows us how to make it as easy as possible.
