New feed mark for horses with gastric ulcers

A new feed mark has been developed to help owners identify products suitable for horses prone to equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS).

Gastric ulcers

The standard was developed by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) in consultation with the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.

All manufacturers can apply, whether or not they are BETA members. The feed they submit must either be a compound feed, or feedstuff that can help manage EGUS, such as chopped or high-fibre feeds, sugar beet, or high oil concentrates. Supplements are excluded.

Approval involves a three-stage process and includes the examination of ingredients, labelling, marketing claims and independent laboratory analysis.

If the product passes, the manufacturer can use the BETA logo on their packaging along with the wording: ‘Suitable for equines prone to gastric ulcers as part of a balanced diet.’

Feeds must also state they can not treat or cure gastric ulcers and provide advice on the management of horses and ponies prone to the condition.

All those given the feed mark will be reviewed on an annual basis.
